To tie into my rant on hair and body positivity. Here is my recipe for hair gel. I use this on my hair when it’s wet and rub it through before drying with a diffuser, as a traditional gel for styling and hold, and I use a watered down solution in a spray bottle to refresh my curls everyday.
Linseed (or flax seed if your American) are high in vitamins and omegas. They nourish and stimulate hair growth and lock in moisture. I love making my own as I can add extra nourishing ingredients like rosemary (for growth), chamomile (to soften) and honey (to condition). Use any herbs etc with water first and brew it up like you would a tea before adding the seeds:
- 1/4 cup of seeds to 2 cups of water or if you’re being very British 4 tablespoons of seeds to 32 tablespoons of water.
- Bring to the boil
- Once boiling stir for a couple of minutes. It will go foamy.
- As soon as it foams, remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
- Strain with muslin and store in a sterilised jar in the fridge (if you don’t use it all up) it will only last a week.
You can add essential oils if you like to make it smell pretty. Be wary of any which may dry your hair out. You can also add your favourite oils while it’s warm but not hot. A great addition could be Neem if you have school aged children as it repels head lice. nettle helps (in the water) for a healthy scalp, Sage makes dark hair really shiny. I love making my own products as I know exactly what’s in them and its sustainable because I’m not buying more plastic!
Like all things adding intention as you perform a task adds to its purpose. While I’m taking the time to rub this slimy beaut into my tresses I picture my hair growing with each stroke in length and strength and repeat this chant.
My hair will grow like finest weeds. My energy like little seeds.
Faster, stronger, to my tail bone it will grow longer.
As I will it, so mote it be.Adaptation from a chant I found online years ago. If its yours I’ll happily credit you.
